About Us

An Eco-Resort. So you may be asking “What is an Eco-Resort”.

An Eco-Resort is a holiday resort that operates according to environmentally sound principles. There are various environmental techniques, methods or actions that can be implemented.

At Mountain Splendour we have already implemented a number of these actions and are in the process of implementing more in the near future.

Our guests are encouraged to conserve water where possible as South Africa is a dry country and water is a limited resource. We are now in the process of collecting rainwater and are using sand filters and UV filters instead of chemicals. Our swimming pool is on a salt chlorinating system instead of using pool chemicals. In our septic tank we add a natural bacteria as an alternative to the usual chemicals used.

It is often the little things that can make a big difference to the environment. So, wherever possible, light bulbs have been changed to the energy efficient type and we have place rechargeable batteries in all of the self-catering units remotes. We make use of only low sulphur diesel in our vehicles and the bike lube stocked in the shop is bio-degradable. We have friendly reminders posted around the resort so guests don’t leave lights on that they are not using and environmental educational messages are posted on the back of all the loo doors!Mountain Splendour is committed to the environment and demonstrated this publicly by participating in Earth Hour in March 2009 and 2010

Mountain Splendour has always found ways to “reduce – reuse and recycle”. In fact almost the entire children’s playground is constructed using discarded and unused farming equipment. In 2008 Iain introduced a recycling facility for glass, paper and tin cans. Very little “rubbish” should end up in the bin if guests make use of the recycling facilities and also take all vegetable scraps and left over bread to the potbellied pigs.

Mountain Splendour has had the Working for Water Team on the property to assist with the control and eradication of invasive plant species. The Working for Water Team are due back as part of their on-going work.

A number of the trees in the resort are not necessarily indigenous. As the park-like surrounds are now well established, an effort is being made to plant indigenous trees and shrubs wherever possible.

Mountain Splendour is a little piece of paradise, tucked away on a small working farm, in the heart of the Central Drakensberg. This 4-star camping resort boasts spectacular mountain views, farm-style personalised service and excellent amenities all set amongst a forest of trees, shrubs and manicured lawns.

Camping is made easy with a selection of luxury private bathrooms, pre-erected safari tents, large raised and levelled sites, tea on arrival, friendly staff to assist with setting up, fridges and mattresses for hire, free freezer space, a serviced laundry and a superb playground for the kids. Outdoor activities include mountain biking, pony rides, tubing, swimming, picnicking, birding, hiking, tennis, volleyball, golf, fishing, white water rafting, canopy tours and zip lines. Nearby enjoy the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, Bird of Prey Centre, restaurants, shops, bakeries, arts and crafts, battlefield sites and wildlife reserves.

Mountain Biking

Mountain Splendour Eco-Resort is a mountain biking haven in the central berg. Mountain Splendour has purpose built single track on the property,offers guided mountain bike rides in the area, hosts training camps and has a fully stocked cycle shop on the property. We are able to offer basic servicing and repairs to bikes and stock a variety of cycling spares, accessories and apparel.

We haven’t forgotten the kids; there is a purpose built kiddies track within the resort boundaries, adjacent to the tennis courts. A few tight turns, a bridge, some humps and bumps and a couple of steps to ride down will keep the kids whizzing around and around all day long!

Mountain Splendour has hosted the Mountain Splendour Mania mountain biking event for the past 6 years and this year will be hosting the 7th Mountain Splendour Mania event over the weekend of 16th to 18th of November.

One of our favourite events to host is the Mongoose/Spur KZN Schools mountain bike series. Each year Iain cuts additional track and improves on the “fun” factor for the kids. This year Mountain Splendour is hosting the 6th event in the series on the 28th of September 2013.

Mountain Splendour Mania 2014 dates have been set for the weekend of the 14th to 16th of November. This is an awesome weekend of Mountain Biking and Trail Running Fun for the whole family.

Corporate Experience

Mountain Splendour Eco-Resort offers premier camping experiences for corporate clients. Camping accommodation is provided in our luxury safari tents that are set-up according to your requirements. The beds are hotel-grade beds with maxi-pedic coil-spring mattresses and each bed is made-up with high-quality white linen. For the cooler months of the year, extra blankets and hot water bottles are provided. Electricity is supplied to each tent for lighting and so that clients may recharge cell phones and laptops.

If required, Mountain Splendour also offers a mobile tented camp that can be set-up just about anywhere. We use the same tents, beds and linen as explained above , transport them to your chosen venue, set-up your camp and ensure you have a stress-free camping experience.

There are numerous activities available at Mountain Splendour and in the immediate area that each client can select according to their needs. In addition, there are specialist adventure outfits that can facilitate and develop outdoor programs to suit your needs.

Catering is outsourced to local catering companies that will provide menus and service to your requirements. Catering can be done “open-air” with the stars as your ceiling or within large tent structures. There are also options for doing “self-catering” by means of potjie or currie making competitions.
