Area info
The Elephant Coast is one of South Africa's most beautiful and unspoilt areas. Few areas in Africa have the incredible diversity of freshwater ecosystems found on the coast. There are major rivers, broad plains, large coastal lagoons, deep clear coastal lakes, extensive swamps and semi-permanent pans. Abundant game and bird species and a wild variety of flora.
Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Game Reserve - 15 minute drive: Established in 1895, this is the oldest game park in Africa. The park offers the "Big 5" + wilderness trails, self-guided walks, game drives, picnic sites, restaurants and a centenary centre. False Bay Park - 2-minute drive: Part of the St Lucia Wetlands Park. False Bay has a variety of habitats such as Sand Forests, thorn-veld and open savannah, providing excellent bird watching and game viewing opportunities when taking one of the self-guided trails. The park contains important marine fossils of both animals and coral, which are on view in the interpretive centre. Facilities included picnic sites, ablutions and a craft shop. Mkuze Game Reserve - 30-minute drive: Proclaimed protected area from the year 1912. This reserve boasts not only a substantial (now rare) sand forest, but also encompasses the Inhlonhlela and Insumo Pans and the Fig Tree Trail. Mkuze is a bird enthusiast haven. Cape Vidal - 45-minute drive: Golden Beaches, coastal forests and clear, blue ocean form the perfect setting for hiking. Mission Rocks, a few kilometres south provides visitors with hours of fascinating exploration in the rock pools, and good shore fishing. Kosi Bay - 45-minute drive: Surrounding the most pristine lake system on the South African coast, this reserve is home to a large variety of birds and animals including hippos and crocodiles. Picnic facilities and boat launch access is available from the third lake. A sand track leading to the mouth offers spectacular views of the lakes and the traditional fishing kraals in lake one. Snorkelling is a popular activity in this area. 4x4 vehicles are recommended when visiting the mouth. Sodwana Bay - 40-minute drive: Sodwana is one of South Africa's prime scuba diving destinations. For the less adventurous, excellent snorkelling spots are plentiful.
